From Paris to Algiers, Singapore to Dublin, the love lock craze has taken the world by storm. The trend became widely popular at the turn of the 21st century, but has its roots in a tale dating back to World War I.
Legend has it a Serbian schoolteacher named Nada fell in love with Relja, a soldier soon to be sent off to fight on the front. Despite their commitment to each other, Relja broke off the engagement and married a woman in Greece when Serbia fell to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Tormented by the love lost, Nada died of a broken heart.
Girls soon thereafter took to affixing locks on a bridge in the town of Vrnjačka Banja to “lock their love in,” a ritual aimed at protecting themselves from a similar fate and honouring Nada’s memory.
The tradition has been mentioned throughout history in literary works and movies, contributing to its steady spread across the globe.
