Since 2001 Rotterdam has been hosting a unique festival about community arts. The most important principle of community arts is that professional (or fulltime) artists collaborate with regular people who normally speaking have nothing to do with art. Over the last decade or so, this art practice has gained enormously in popularity, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere. The result has been the formation of a very diverse cultural field that extends all the way from the favelas in Brazil to the Sydney Opera House and from the townships in Johannesburg to the Zuidplein in Rotterdam. Community arts incorporates all imaginable art disciplines.
