HISTORY & HERITAGE
THE STORY BEGINS ON THE SAILING SHIPS WHERE CASKS OF WINE WERE ONCE TRANSPORTED ON THE OPEN DECKS EXPOSED TO THE NATURAL ELEMENTS OF THE FOUR SEASONS.
The combined action of time and weather over these long journeys made the colour of the wine darker and its taste more pronounced and powerful. When faster steam ships were introduced in the 19th century, the fine French wines began to lose their rich flavour.
In 1813 Joseph Noilly created his first French vermouth and it was his son, Louis Noilly who recreated this natural process, unique to Noilly Prat, by ageing wines outdoors in hundreds of oak casks in a walled enclosure, L'Enclos. Noilly Prat was formed when Louis Noilly joined forces with his son-in-law Claudius Prat to establish Noilly Prat & Cie in 1855.
BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED
LA MAISON NOILLY PRAT FOUND ITS HOME IN THE SMALL, PRETTY FISHING VILLAGE OF MARSEILLAN, SURROUNDED BY SUN-DRENCHED VINEYARDS THAT OVERLOOK THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA.
Some of these regional grape varietals, in particular Picpoul and Clairette, are aged in L'Enclos where hundreds of oak casks sit side by side for 12 months exposed to the sun, sea, wind and rain.
Noilly Prat Original Dry is created using a secret recipe of around 20 herbs and spices sourced from all over the world, including Roman Chamomile from France and Nutmeg from Indonesia. These herbs and spices are gently macerated for 3 weeks in the blended wines to give Noilly Prat Original Dry its distinct, aromatic profile. Every day for these 3 weeks, the wines are stirred by hand, gently infusing them with all the unique aromas and flavours of the botanicals. This time honoured process in called the dodinage.
GLOBAL RECOGNITION
IT WAS THE MAGNIFICENT ANNE-ROSINE, DAUGHTER OF LOUIS NOILLY AND WIDOW OF CLAUDIUS PRAT, who continued to drive the fortunes and French elegance of Noilly Prat, a time when women in business faced considerable challenges, for nearly 40 years. In that time Anne-Rosine established an international reputation for the brand and was the first to export.
