La JGM. Galerie a été créée en 1987 par Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand qui a alors ouvert son premier espace rue Jacques Callot dans le 6ème arrondissement de Paris. Sa première intention était de promouvoir la sculpture. Ainsi les artistes du Nouveau Réalisme ont été privilégiés au cours des dix premières années avec des expositions consacrées à Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Takis, Jean Pierre Raynaud. D’autres sculpteurs, comme Agustin Cardenas, Philippe Hiquily, Marta Pan et surtout Claude et François-Xavier Lalanne sont venus enrichir ce premier projet artistique.

Cette vocation pour la sculpture, la JGM. Galerie l’a naturellement développée en organisant des expositions de sculptures monumentales en France et à l’étranger. Une rétrospective de Niki de Saint Phalle organisée avec l’AFAA a circulé dans les principaux musées d’Amérique de Sud entre 1995 et 1997. Puis le succès des expositions en France, comme « Les Champs de la Sculpture » organisée en 1996 sur les Champs-Élysées à Paris, et d’autres organisées au Luxembourg, à Taïwan, etc., a confirmé les compétences de la galerie à réaliser des projets monumentaux. En Asie et en Europe, la JGM. Galerie a par la suite été sollicitée pour conseiller des sociétés et des administrations dans l’acquisition de sculptures. Les œuvres de nombreux artistes (Soto, Marta Pan, Takis, Pol Bury, Tony Cragg) ont ainsi pu être implantées dans des espaces publics. En 2010, la JGM. Galerie a organisé une exposition de sculpture monumentale dans le cadre de World Expo à Shanghai. L’exposition « Art for the World, The Expo » regroupe vingt artistes internationaux (Dan Graham, Wim Delvoye, Zhang Huan, etc.) sur le boulevard principal de l’exposition universelle. Neuf sculptures ont été acquises par la ville de Shanghai et resteront donc implantées dans la ville.

En 2003, la galerie déménage dans le Marais à Paris (rue du Temple). Ce déménagement est également l’occasion de redéfinir quelque peu son projet artistique. Tout en conservant son savoir-faire dans les projets monumentaux et en soutenant ses artistes historiques, la JGM. Galerie s’ouvre à des artistes d’horizons différents. Ainsi, la galerie redécouvre des artistes majeurs ayant eu une visibilité réduite en France depuis dix ans comme Keith Sonnier, Fred Wilson, Peter Kogler ou encore Laurie Simmons. Elle révèle également des artistes dont la reconnaissance tardive est liée au contexte politique dont ils sont issus, comme l’artiste roumain Ion Grigorescu et l’artiste albanais Edi Hila. Enfin, elle confirme son intérêt pour les nouveaux talents d’Asie comme Li Yongbin, Lin Tianmiao, Siu Jianguo et Zheng Guogu. Sensible au développement de l’art chinois, la galerie a ouvert un bureau à Shanghai en 2007 pour piloter de nouveaux projets sur place et pour être au plus près des artistes émergents.

En 2014, La JGM Galerie devient Galerie Mitterrand et ouvre un nouvel espace à la même adresse dédié à une nouvelle génération de sculpteurs.

JGM. Galerie was opened in 1987 by Jean Gabriel Mitterrand with a space on rue Jacques Callot in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It was his intention to promote sculpture and the work of artists belonging to the Nouveau Realism movement such as Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. For the first 10 years JGM. Galerie worked with a number of significant artists, most notably Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Augustin Cardenas and Marta Pan.

The gallery developed its reputation for sculpture by organizing a number of monumental exhibitions both in France and abroad. A Niki de Saint Phalle retrospective organized with the AFAA (French Association for Artistic Action), travelled across South America to a number of important museums between 1995 and 1997. Highly successful shows such as “Les Champs de la Sculpture” organized in 1996 on the Champs- Élysées in Paris, and exhibitions in cities such as Luxembourg and Taiwan strengthened the reputation of the gallery for realizing large-scale projects. Since then, JGM. Galerie has worked throughout Europe and Asia advising companies and administrations on the acquisition of sculpture. Consequently the works of several key artists such as Soto, Marta Pan, Takis, Pol Bury and Tony Cragg can now be viewed and enjoyed in public spaces throughout the world. In 2010 JGM. Galerie organized an exhibition as part of the World Expo in Shanghai. Titled “Art of the World” the project brought together monumental works by 20 international artists such as Dan Graham, Win Delvoye and Zhang Huan, on the main boulevard running through the World Expo site. Nine of these sculptures were subsequently acquired by Shanghai and will continue to remain in the city.

In 2003 the gallery moved to its current home at 79 rue du Temple in the Marais in Paris. In part this move was to help redefine the work of the gallery, allowing it to maintain its reputation for realizing monumental sculptural projects, but also to rediscover the work of major artists such as Keith Sonnier, Fred Wilson, Peter Kogler and Laurie Simmons, who had all lacked visibility in France for some years. The gallery has also exhibited the work of Romanian Ion Grigorescu and Albanian Edi Hila whose late recognition owes to their backgrounds being framed against challenging political circumstances. Furthermore the gallery has committed to the work of new Asian talents such as Li Yongbin, Lin Tianmiao, Sui Jianguo and Zheng Guogu, opening an office in Shanghai in 2007 to coordinate new projects in the area and to be closer to these new emerging talents.

In 2014 the JGM Galerie has become Galerie Mitterrand and has opened a new exhibition space (at the same address) dedicated to a new generation of sculptors.
